In January of this Year, 102 students from Year 9, 10 and 11 at Priestnall School enthusiastically entered the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) Intermediate Maths Challenge (IMC) after several weeks of intense preparation.
The UKMT IMC is a 60 minute, 25 multiple choice challenge.
It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency.
The questions on the Intermediate Maths Challenge are designed to make students think mathematically and develop problem solving skills.
Of those that entered from Priestnall School, 35 achieved a Bronze award, 19 achieved Silver, and 3 achieved Gold.
This was a fantastic result for the students and the school, with over 50% winning an award!
A special mention also goes to three students who achieved “Best in Year” certificates within the school.
Well done to Joe H in Year 9, Jake C in Year 10 Lucas C-B in Year 11!
After receiving their certificates, Joe and Lucas were invited to take part in follow-on rounds of the competition, the Grey and Pink Kangaroos respectively.
These rounds involved the top mathematicians from across the country, so they were no easy feat!
We are pleased to announce that Joe received a Certificate of Merit for the Grey Kangaroo, finishing within the top 25% of candidates who entered the challenge.
Quite an achievement for Joe, his family and the school.
We look forward to following his progress in the Cayley Olympiad next year.
The Cayley Mathematical Olympiad is a 2 hour challenge consisting of six problems requiring full written solutions, and not for the faint hearted!
